SHOULD YOU CONSIDER OWNING A WOODEN PHONE CASE?

The next big decision you make after buying a new phone is a phone case. For anyone who wants to get one, the options are endless. But to find the right one is a tricky business. For that reason, this article will tell you how wooden cases are better than mass-produced plastic cases.

Pros

Aesthetics

It’s the primary reason why people buy wooden cases. No two wood cases can be the same, because of the texture and wood grain naturally appearing in wood. Unlike batch produced plastic cases, wooden cases are made from real wood and real wood is made by Mother Nature, causing no two pieces to be identical. Like a fingerprint, the natural properties are unique. Therefore, no two wooden iPhone case can ever be identical.

It Looks Better with Time

While this may vary from person to person, in terms of liking it disliking it, but the fact remains the same: wood will show aged with time. Like a good wine, it will contain a deeper color, it may have some scratches and dents and any potential engraving you may have (done) on it will show darker as well. Plastic cases instead simplyget faded and ultimately dirty to the point that you cannot remove it anymore.

Striking Piece

It’s in human nature: we love what’s unique. And what is more unique than a natural wood iPhone case in a world full of plastic ones. You can expect others asking you where you got your wood phone case, because it has that effect on people

Customizable

Personalization is more difficult to accomplish on a plastic case versus a wood case. With laser engraving technology, a wood iphone case can have a custom design or drawing engraving specific to the person’s request. Companies use them for their employees and add their logo on it, retail customers engrave them with their favorite sports team, or city’s skyline, the possibilities are endless. It’s almost like a tattoo.

Cons

High-priced

Perhaps the biggest reason making you choose against a wood case is the increased price. You can own a plastic case for just $10. Whereas wooden phone cases are priced more around the $25-$35 range. Not taking any personalisation into consideration. There is a legitimate reason for that though: wood needs to be harvested and then processed into the case it becomes, whereas a plastic alternative is created by filling molds. Wood cases take more resources to become the end product, hence it is slightly more expensive to purchase as well.

However, note that wood iPhone cases commonly last a long time so taking time value into the equation, it’s possible you will end up spending less on phone cases by purchasing one high quality wood case that last you a long time, compared to three low quality plastic ones in the same time frame.

Susceptible to Moisture and UV light

Most things organic change color when exposed to the natural elements. Wood is no different and changes color into a more yellow-ish tone if exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods of time. While it is generally not a good idea to put your expensive phone in direct sunlight either, we do also recommend to not do the same even if you have a wood case to protect it, but rather store it in your purse or jacket’s pocket when not in use.

Another natural element that changes organic materials is water. Again, while you wouldn’t want your phone to be submerged in water for extensive periods of time, most of them are waterproof nowadays. But a wood case is not. Submerged in water, wood will most certainly eventually get some sort of damage.

However, note that all wood cases have a varnish coating to protect it from rain or sweat and you have therefore nothing to worry about if exposure to water is not for extended periods of time.
